Hebrews 1:3 “He upholds the universe by the word of His power”

Hebrews 1:3 describes Jesus Christ as “upholding the universe by the word of His power,” a phrase that emphasizes His sovereignty, divine authority, and active role in sustaining creation.

Let’s unpack this statement in its biblical and theological context.

Upholding the Universe

The Greek word translated as “upholds” (pherō) does not merely mean to carry or support something passively. It conveys the idea of actively sustaining, maintaining, and guiding something toward its intended purpose. Jesus is not like Atlas from Greek mythology, struggling to bear the weight of the cosmos on His shoulders. Instead, He actively governs and sustains all creation with ease and purpose.

The “universe” here refers to all that exists—every star, planet, atom, and living being. Jesus ensures the continued existence, order, and functioning of everything in creation.

By the Word of His Power

This phrase points to the instrument and authority by which Jesus upholds creation: His powerful word. This echoes the opening of Hebrews, where God is said to have spoken through His Son (Hebrews 1:1-2). It also recalls the creation account in Genesis, where God spoke the universe into being (Genesis 1:3). Similarly, John 1:1-3 identifies Jesus as the eternal Word through whom all things were made.

Jesus’ word is not a mere sound or suggestion; it is the divine command that carries omnipotent authority. By His word, He governs every detail of the universe, ensuring that all things hold together (Colossians 1:17).

Christ’s Sovereignty and Providence

This passage highlights Jesus’ role in providence, the theological doctrine that God continually preserves and governs His creation. As the exact imprint of God’s nature, Jesus exercises this providential care with the same power and wisdom as the Father.

This means that every aspect of creation, from the vast galaxies to the smallest molecules, operates under His sovereign control. Seasons change, stars shine, and hearts beat because Jesus wills it to be so. He is not a distant or detached deity but an active Lord who is intimately involved in the ongoing work of sustaining all things.

Christ and the Gospel

The sustaining power of Christ also applies to His redemptive work. Just as He upholds the physical universe, He sustains His people spiritually. He ensures that His church is preserved and that the salvation He accomplished is brought to completion (Philippians 1:6). His word upholds not only the universe but also His promises to redeem and sustain His people.

Conclusion

When Hebrews 1:3 says that Jesus “upholds the universe by the word of His power,” it reveals His divine authority, sovereignty, and active role in both creation and redemption. He is not only the Creator but also the Sustainer, the one who ensures that all things exist and fulfill God’s purposes. For believers, this truth provides profound comfort: the same Lord who holds the stars in place also holds us securely in His care.
