Romans 11:14 Meaning – might save some of them

Observe, from this passage, how a minister of the word of truth may be said to save, in his own way and manner, those who are brought by him to the obedience of faith; for we ought, as the stewards of God’s mysteries, so to conduct the dispensation of salvation to our people, as to know that all the virtue and efficacy of it is in the power of God, and thus bestow on him the praise he deserves.

We must always keep in mind, that the preaching of the gospel is the instrument by which the salvation of believers can be procured; and notwithstanding it can avail nothing without the Spirit of the Author of all happiness, yet its energy is exerted with very powerful effect when the internal influences of the Holy Ghost act with might and vigour.

Calvin, JohnCommentary on the Epistle to the Romans tr. Francis Sibson (1834)

‘One great reason why I am so desirous thoroughly to Christianize the Gentiles is, that seeing their holy happiness, some of my deluded countrymen may so emulate this happiness as to seek to share it, and thus I may be the means of their salvation.’

Brown, JohnAnalytical exposition of the epistle of Paul the apostle to the Romans (1857)
