While some are more explicitly identified as types in Scripture, others can be understood as foreshadowing Christ based on patterns and themes.

Adam: The First Man

Type: Adam was the representative head of humanity. His disobedience brought sin and death into the world.

Fulfillment: Christ is the “second Adam,” the new representative head of redeemed humanity. Through His obedience, He brings righteousness and life.

Scripture: Romans 5:14-19; 1 Corinthians 15:21-22, 45.


Abel: The Righteous Martyr

Type: Abel offered an acceptable sacrifice to God and was murdered by his brother out of envy.

Fulfillment: Christ is the perfectly righteous One who offers Himself as a pleasing sacrifice to God and is unjustly killed by sinful men.

Noah: The Deliverer

Type: Noah obeyed God and built an ark to save his family from the flood, a symbol of God’s judgment.

Joshua: The Conqueror

Type: Joshua led Israel into the Promised Land, securing rest for the people.

Fulfillment: Christ is the greater Joshua (the name “Jesus” is derived from “Yeshua,” meaning “Joshua”), leading His people into the eternal rest of God’s kingdom.

Boaz: The Kinsman-Redeemer

Type: Boaz redeemed Ruth, providing for her and her family as a kinsman-redeemer under the law.

Elijah: The Prophet

Type: Elijah performed miracles, called Israel to repentance, and ascended to heaven in a whirlwind.

Fulfillment: Christ is the ultimate Prophet, performing greater miracles, calling sinners to repentance, and ascending into heaven to intercede for His people.

Jonah: The Sign of Resurrection

Type: Jonah spent three days in the belly of the fish and emerged to preach repentance.

Fulfillment: Christ spent three days in the tomb and rose again to proclaim the gospel of salvation.

Seth: The Appointed One

Aaron: The High Priest
